Principle of Increasing Fun & Play - Example

In his cross-examination of Detective Mark Fuhrman during the O. J. Simpson trial, F. Lee Bailey proceeded something like this. Bailey was becoming increasingly nasty attempting to bait his witness.

Bailey: Why do you suppose someone called Bell would want to attack you?

Fuhrman: I can't think of any reason.

Bailey: Is it possible that any members of the Bell family . . . is there even one person . . . who would have reason to attack you?

Fuhrman: Well, I really don't know.

Bailey: Does the name Bell mean anything to you?

Fuhrman: No, I don't really know anyone by that name (pondering the question) . . . it really doesn't ring a bell.

Ha! ha! ha! The courtroom breaks up and even the Avenging Angel has to pause and back off. But then the sequence has been broken.
