Understanding Integrity Budget Units (IBUs)

Artful Navigator uses Integrity Budget Units (IBUs) to set up and track budgets for missions, subcategories, and the Life Pie categories.

An Integrity Budget Unit is an aggregate of four resources:

The values represent the relative importance of the resource. Thus, your most precious resource, creative emotion, is four times more valuable than time. Artful Navigator uses these ratios in calculating IBUs.

A total of 2400 IBUs are allocated daily for all missions in all categories. Artful Navigator allocates these IBUs according to the proportions you specify.

Thus, when you define a mission, Artful Navigator asks you to set up a budget for it by determining how much of your daily resources (in IBUs) you want to allocate to it and how many days you plan to devote to it. Artful Navigator then calculates the IBUs for that mission.

By allocating resources to a mission, you define the relative importance of that mission in relation to other missions within that category. Likewise, when you initially set budgets for your life quadrants (i.e., the main categories of Professional, Personal, Physical, and Spiritual), you establish their relative importance.

As you change IBUs for a mission, Artful Navigator adjusts the IBUs for the other missions or subcategories within a category.

Example

Let's say under your Professional quadrant, you have a category called Consulting, to which you've allocated 300 IBUs daily. Under Consulting you have missions A, B, and C, each of which has 100 IBUs. If you increase IBUs for A to 150, Artful Navigator automatically decreases proportionally the IBUs for B and C by 25 each. The total IBUs for Consulting remains at 300.

Keeping Track of IBUs "Spent" in Action Logs

Each ring in Artful Navigator has a Budget icon on the right. This icon is used for recording the amount of IBUs spent for a negotiation. Artful Navigator keeps track of the budget spent in all negotiations for a mission vs: the budget allocated when the mission was initially defined. By clicking the "Your Budget" button in the Budget window, you can see how much of the budget have (or your team) has spent in advancing a mission.
