Principle of Containment

Containment refers to the ability to hold thoughts and emotions coherently together especially under duress. The container is a living thing. It breathes. If all the pores are stopped up, the wind and light cannot pass through. Yet if the container is too porous, it becomes leaky and you will be unable to concentrate your vital energies on productive work.

Each person's container is different and each situation brings its own special demands for containment.

The practice of integrity is the purposeful development of the container. When the container is healthy and alive no encounter, no contingency in life will be too difficult.

If you work seriously on building the foundation, you will have a place to hold a bit of the universe -- your joys and defeats, another's gains and sorrows -- a place for your unique gifts to come into the world.
