By the Baleful Forces of the Universe

In the early part of Shakespeare's MacBeth MacBeth's friend and fellow soldier, Banquo, observes to himself shortly after their meeting with the three witches on the heath:

". . . but tis strange:
And oftentimes, to win us to our harm,
The instruments of darkness tell us truths,
Win us with honest trifles, to betray's
In deepest consequence."

And then again at the end of the tragedy after Birnam Wood has magically come to Dunsinane, MacBeth's stronghold, and all that he has clawed for is falling apart, MacBeth exclaims:

"And be these juggling fiends no more believed,
That palter with us in a double sense;
That keep the word of promise to our ear,
And break it to our hope!"
